PWID Donations to Special Olympics Arizona

January 25, 2013

Worthy Grand Knights and Brothers All,

State Deputy Bryant Sayers and I had a great meeting on January 22, 2013 with Tim Martin, President and Chief Executive Officer of Special Olympics Arizona. Amongst other things we discussed our continued support for the Special Olympics Arizona and the best process for us to make donations to his organization.
Mr. Martin advised us that there are only 51 official Special Olympic 501c3 organizations in the United Sates. There is one for each State in the USA, as well as Puerto Rico. The local Special Olympic organizations all work within their State’s organization. Only the State level organization has a bank account.  All funds for Special Olympics must go through the State Organization.  They, in turn, keep track of funds donated to each community and supplies funds to them upon their request.
We expressed to Mr. Martin that our subordinate councils throughout Arizona want to make donations to support the activities happening in their local communities. He advised us to write all checks to “Special Olympics Arizona” and earmark the local activity in the Memo Line of the check.
Going forward, all checks written by the Arizona State Council for State and/or subordinate council’s PWID or other donations, to any Special Olympics organization in Arizona, will be written to “Special Olympics Arizona” and earmarked with the local activity in the Memo Line of the check. The subordinate council can request the original check be sent to the council, so they can present it to the local Special Olympic group. Otherwise, the original check will be sent directly to the Special Olympics Arizona headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona and a copy of the check will be sent to the council as proof of the check being written.
We assured Mr. Martin that the Arizona Knights of Columbus will continue to support Arizona Special Olympics at the State and local level.  We look forward to a fruitful partnership with this organization.
Please reach out to State Secretary Larry Becker at azlarry@cox.net for any question or concerns.

Vivat Jesus!

A Message From The State Secretary January 2013

A Message from the State Secretary
January 2013
Brothers,

Please be aware that the Arizona State Per Capita assessment statements for the 2nd half of fraternal year 2012-2013 have been created and emailed your council’s Financial Secretary in mid-January 2013.  We are using the council’s Financial Secretary’s email address listed in the current State Directory. If we do not have his email address, we will USPS mail the statement to the Financial Secretary’s mailing address listed in the State Directory.

According to the State By-Laws, Article 8, Section 5:
“All subordinate councils in Arizona shall be entitled to a discount of ten (10) cents per taxable member on the amount of the State Council per capita assessment for the current period if paid within thirty (30) days of billing, and if not paid within thirty (30) days no discount shall be allowed.”
You will see this rebate on your statement. If your council pays their Per Capita and the envelope the check is USPS mailed to the State Secretary is postmarked on or before by March 2, 2013, the council is entitled to this discount.

In accordance to the Supreme By-Laws, Section 57:
“Councils failing to pay such assessments or Supreme Council assessments shall not be entitled to representation in their State Council until they do pay the same and any arrears.”
Your council is required to pay the entire State Per Capita assessment and Arrearage before the Arizona State Convention on May 17, 2013, in order to seat your council’s delegates in the State Convention.

Also, the St. Joseph’s Youth Camp and Navarrete Vocations listed on the statement are voluntary. Although they are not required to be paid, we strongly suggest your council pays these voluntary amounts. All funds collected a given to St. Joseph’s Youth Camp or used for Vocations accordingly.

Please make the Per Capita check payable to “Arizona State Council, Knights of Columbus.” Please USPS mail the check to:  Larry Becker, State Secretary, 1701 West Houston Ave, Gilbert, AZ 85233-1708.

Please contact State Secretary Larry Becker at azlarry@cox.net with any questions or concerns.

Convent Help - Council 8077 - Tucson

Knights of the Tucson Chapter are pitching in to help the nuns at Immaculate Heart convent, chapel and school in Tucson.  Knights from Council 8077 put in nearly 30 new lights and repaired outlets, as well as fixed the sound system in the chapel in one Saturday in January.

The pictures are:

I'm finished, you guys pretty it up.

GK Ricardo Preciado and Mike Dinapoli wait for their turn to finish the job.

Clear Roadway - Council 14089

St. Christopher's church in Marana risked losing parish property that had become a "public roadway" due to people driving through the area.  Fr. Abran Tadeo obtained donated fencing but needed the fencing cut in order to protect church grounds.

Knights from St. Damien of Molokai, Council 14089, in Marana gathered on a cold Saturday morning to
support their parish and priests.

1.)  # 2998 --- Eight rolls of 10' and 12'  fencing had to be placed,

2.)  # 2990 --- positioned,

3.)  # 3000 --- rolled out,

4.)  # 2994 --- measured, cut and re-rolled.

5.)  # 3001 --- under capable, encouraging leadership

6.)  # 3006 --- all before noon.

Grand Knight Jim Maino was thankful for the tremendous turnout and hard work of so many.
