The Celebration of Artwork Restoration at the Garden of Gethsemane took place Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014. Many dignitaries were on hand for the occasion marking the completion of nearly a two year effort in planning and execution. Dignitaries present included Fred H. Gray Jr., Director, Tucson Parks and Recreation Department, Jonathon Rothschild, Mayor of Tucson, Richard Elias, Pima County Board of Supervisors District 5, Regina Romero, Council Member, Ward 1, Richard G. Fimbres, Council Member, Ward 5, Bryant Sayers, Knights of Columbus AZ State Deputy, Mary Gardner, Secretary/Treasurer of the Salvador Foundation and Most Rev. Gerald F. Kicanas, D.D., Bishop of Tucson who blessed the statues.

The Knights of Columbus thank the Salvador Foundation who provided grant funds of $51,000 and the artist Gregory Schoon for the many hours of work and skill that went into the effort. Special thanks to Sir Knight Ralph Montijo who worked to obtain the grant, find and contract with the artist and manage the project from conception to successful completion.

K of C Charity Raffle Update #3 Manual and letters

By now, all councils should have received a supply of Charity Raffle tickets, letters for the Grand Knight, Financial Secretary, Treasurer, and Raffle Chairman along with a manual for each.

In the past four years, we have established the AZ Charity Raffle team members as the State Officers, District Deputies, and Insurance Field Agents. These leaders make up the outside team since they are outside the council. In the past, we also gave each council Grand Knight a letter and Charity Raffle Guide [Manual] to share with their Raffle Chairman.

This year we expanded the council team to include not only the Grand Knight and Raffle Chairman but also the Financial Secretary and Treasurer. Each plays an important role in the success of the raffle program so they also received a letter and manual. These four officers make up the inside team.

State Officers, District Deputies, Field Agents, and Tucson Council 1200 have extra tickets.

On January 4^th 2014, approximately 210 Catholic Scouts and Scouters from around the State gathered at the Tumacacori National Historic Park for the annual Anza Trek Catholic Scouting Retreat. Hosted by the Diocese of Tucson’s Catholic Committee for Scouting, this annual retreat offers an opportunity to travel the trails of early Catholic missionaries in the region and build lasting friendships among Catholic Scouts while learning more about their faith. This year’s theme was “Exploring the Rosary” and participants reflected on and learned more about the Rosary’s importance through presentations and the prayers of the Rosary as they traveled the trail from Tubac to Tumacacori. Each participant was given a Rosary (donated by St Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Sierra Vista) and a “How to Pray the Rosary” booklet (donated by the State Knights of Columbus). In addition to the Boy Scout Troops, Cub Scout Packs, and Boy Scout Venture Crews from the throughout the Diocese, girls from American Heritage Girls Troop AZ1464 (charted by Council #4584, Sierra Vista) and Troop AZ1212 (chartered by St Mark’s Catholic Church, Tucson) also participated. Bishop Kicanas celebrated Mass outside the walls of the original Tumacacori mission. The event closed with a campfire that included skits and songs from the youth as well as a performance from the Singing Scoutmasters.

Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 464, Cub Scout Pack 464, and

American Heritage Girls Troop AZ1464 completed the hike. All three youth groups are charted by the Knights of Columbus in Sierra Vista.

In preparation for improvements and the 50 year anniversary of the Redemptorist Renewal Center at Picture Rocks, near Tucson, Council 15704 Chaplain, and center director Fr. Paul Coury asked the Knights of Our Lady of the Desert to dismantle and reassembly the meditative rock labyrinth February 8.

Charity Raffle Team members, by now, all councils should have their 2014 Charity Raffle information that includes a supply of tickets and envelops for the Grand Knight, Financial Secretary, Treasurer and Raffle Chairman. Each envelop contains a letter and manual. In the Raffle Chairman’s envelope, there are the Charity Raffle Sales Report, Century Sale Report, and Individual Knights Sale of $1,000 or more. The last two reports are on one page. These reports are used when everything is turned in at convention time.

In addition, each council should have received three posters with English on one side and Spanish on the other.

On Monday February 10^th we will conduct a session on the Charity Raffle at the Tucson Chapter meeting. All Raffle Chairman are invited especially those who are members of the Chapter. The session is scheduled in a room next to the Chapter meeting. We will have extra tickets for councils that need more tickets.

PWID for DSN AZ - Council 10062

Corpus Christi Council 10062 was happy to present a check to Executive Director Alex Duggan and Board Member Rick Sughroe of Down Syndrome Network of Arizona. Council 10062 was able to raise over $5,000 for the PWID to help Special Olympics and Down Syndrome Network. The check for $3,900 was presented by Grand Knight Dennis Sullivan and PWID Co-Chairman Tom Kato.

4105--Knights of Council 5542 in San Manuel were asked to prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner for more than 80 Motocross riders and their families earlier this month. Ready for business!

4082--A record number of riders receive instruction and rules before the Arizona Trail Riders event earlier this month in San Manuel.

4102--Riders and their families appreciated the food provided by the Knights of Columbus. "You should come to all of our events," several riders said.

4090--Joe Gonzales, Bruce Robertson, PGK Johnnie Seballos and "Rod" Rodriguez have a great, fraternal time cooking for the Arizona Trail Riders competition in San Manuel.

4085--"To Go" is a little hard on a dirt bike.

4097--PGK and event chairman Gene Helgeson looks more than satisfied with the teamwork, cooking and fraternity at February's moto cross race in San Manuel.

Dedication for St Mark's Church - Oro Valley

4036--Many Sir Knights made their first Honor Guard call out at the dedication of the new St. Mark church in Oro Valley, January 26, "and executed duties extremely well," according to Color Corps Commander Drew Mansager.

4002--The St. Mark IV made their debut at their home parish's church dedication January 26. They are l to r Bill Buhs, Bryan Doris, GK Rich Robinson and John Kubat.

4044--Kazimierz Kozak receives assurances from CCC Drew Mansager while PFN Louis Centobene surveys the Honor Guard. Kozak made his Fourth Degree on January 11 and served in his first Honor Guard 15 days later.

4015--CCC Bill Barrett confers with SK Patrick Roll before the dedication of the new St. Mark church in Oro Valley. CCC Jose Louis Perez, of Assembly 16, and brother Robert Roll anticipate the day's dedication.

4051(2)-4052(2)--Eighteen Sir Knights took part in the Honor Guard for the dedication of St. Mark church January 26 in Oro Valley.

Orange Picking - Tucson

Knights, family members and friends from the Tucson area gathered to harvest the orange crop at the Benedictine Monastery on Saturday, January 25, 2014. There were 61 people signed in for the event, the largest turnout ever. The weather was beautiful and everyone seemed to enjoy the day. All were served a delicious lunch before leaving. After the oranges were picked, washed and juiced, the sisters now have more than 60 gallons of frozen orange juice.

The Benedictine Monastery is home to about 27 members of the Sisters of Perpetual Adoration. Prioress Sister Ramona expressed her gratitude by email, “May God reward you a hundredfold.”
