Tucson 4th Degree Knights Teach Flag Folding Class

Our Worthy District Marshall AZ South, Drew Mansager, joined Sir Knights from the Father Anthony Rey Assembly # 3617 on 09 August 2017 to teach the 8^th graders (some 60 students) from Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School how to properly fold the US Flag.

This was a hand-on training event and the students were very attentive and showed great respect for “Old Glory.”  Sir Knights first trained the students from Mrs. Patti Barrett's 8th grade class, then the students from Mrs. Marty Ratliff's 8th grade class.

Instruction included how to raise and lower the flag on the school’s 25 foot tall flagpole.  A little flag history and flag protocol were also imparted to the students.

The knights thank Principal (Mrs. Charlene Roll) for this great opportunity to practice PATRIOTISM!  A great way to start the school year.

Tucson Knights Build Treewells for School

For 5 consecutive weekends, knights of the Bishop Francis J. Green Council # 11855 put in over 535 man-hours building four 10’ x 10’ treewell planters at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School.  Our biggest challenge was not triple digit temperatures or the monsoon rains but trying to keep our Worthy State Chaplain, Fr. Pat Crino, from hitting the water line with his pick ax.  JUST KIDDING!  BUT…. Fr. Pat was there to lift not only our spirits but also some tools as he sweat right along with the rest of us.  Seminarian Richard Rivera was our “Batchman” mixing the mortar and stucco.  Several family members were also there to help and have fun.  The final coat of paint went on two days before school started.

Our prayers to Saint Joseph the Worker were answered as the project was completed on time.

The Father Anthony Rey Assembly No. 3617 Restoring the Salpointe Catholic Flag Pole

“Get it done before the rains!”  That was the rallying cry for the Restoration Sir Knights from the Father Anthony Rey Assembly No. 3617.  There was a need to scrap, sand, prime, and paint to restore the flag pole on the Salpointe Catholic High School on the campus and outside the Main Hall.  The existing flag pole needed a fresh coat of paint.  The flag pole was installed and dedicated on October, 29^th, 1950 by the “Tucson Fourth Degree Assembly” as the plaque indicates.  Sir Knights, Dennis Mallory, Chris Mayer, and Faithful Navigator, Ray Obral along with Sir Knight Robert Roll who brought his young Son, Conner, to help.  It took two days to complete.  See the photos for the great time we had and how it was done.  Oh, 40-feet and 11-inches to the top!

Program Ideas

I know it is hot but it is not to early to think about Christmas and activities that supports Supreme's Domestic Church Initiative. You can get the youth of your Parish involved along with their families by sponsoring a   Keep Christ in Christmas poster contest. Another initiative to consider is the Christian Relief Solidarity Cross Program The program invites K of C units to purchase 5-inch olivewood crosses made by Christian artisans in the Holy Land and then to sell them in their parishes and communities for a suggested donation of $10 to $20 per cross. The crosses themselves serve as a reminder to pray for persecuted Christians, and net proceeds of all sales are contributed to the Knights of Columbus Christian Refugee Relief Fund.  Your Council can order Crosses made in the Holy Land and all proceeds will support persecuted Christians  https://www.kofc.org/un/en/resources/charities/christian-relief/solidarity-cross-flyer.pdf

Flagstaff Fourth of July

The Flagstaff Fourth of July Parade drew some 20,000 attendees.  The Knights of Columbus was well represented by 24 Sir Knights from six Assemblies (#17-Flagstaff; #s 2308 & 3617-Tucson; #2537-Pinetop/St John’s; #2889-Mesa; and one unidentified Assembly).  Two Sir Knights carried a K of C banner followed by a 7-Sir Knight Color Guard commanded by Marshal (North) Pete Kloeber and a 15-Sir Knight Color Corps unit commanded by Marshal (South) Drew Mansager.  Following the parade, host Assembly 17 provided a BBQ lunch for all participants and their families with some 70 in attendance.

Fast Start - Membership

As State Deputy Sean Halpain said in his July Message, “One of the pearls of Wisdom that members of the Supreme Membership staff remind us of is that States don’t make Circle of Honor the first 4 months of the year, but they can miss it if those months are not productive.”  The Supreme Knight has instructed all State Deputies to work hard to have a fast start in the first quarter of the new Fraternal Year.  He has given each state a goal to meet which is one more member each month (July, August, and September) than the best achieved in the same month over the past five years.  Our quota for July is 61 members.  We have 6 new members so far in July.  55 to go.

Let’s work hard to have a fast start this year.  Let’s bring those Catholic gentlemen who you just missed recruiting in June, and any other candidates you have been working on into the Order right away. Schedule those Admission Degrees.

Membership growth is a responsibility we all share, and the best way to grow the order is to embrace “Membership 365” – recruiting year-round.  Don’t take the summer off!  Increasing membership in Arizona now, will make the end of the year less stressful, and the new members will be able to enjoy the benefits of membership sooner.  Your councils will enjoy the energy and fresh Ideas these new members will bring as well.

We will be sharing our membership incentives including our “Fast Start” incentive with District Deputies and attendees at the Organizational Meeting this coming weekend, but don’t miss your chance to compete for a cash award for a fast start by waiting until after the Organizational Meeting to get started!  Let’s go out and have a strong first quarter, starting with 61 new members in July!
