SK Rev. Joseph Gillespie - Obituary

Sir Knight, Rev. Joseph Gillespie

December 21, 1924 - November 26, 2012

Chaplain_emeritus
It is with great sadness that the Knights of Columbus Arizona State Council mourns the death of Brother Knight and State Chaplain Emeritus Sir Knight Rev. Joseph Gillespie. Fr. Joe was called to his eternal rest with our Lord this past Monday evening. Viewing will be on Friday morning, November 30, 2012 at 9:00 AM. Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. Both will be held at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church located at 3424 N. 18th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85015.

Joseph Gillespie was born in County Donegal, Ireland in 1924. He attended All Hollows College in Dublin.   Father Gillespie graduated from a seminary that trained priests for the missions, and at that time, the United States was still considered a mission territory. So was Australia. When Father was ready to be ordained, he and a buddy said they wanted to go to Australia.  The priest who made the assignments said to him "Mr. Gillespie, would you be going to Tuck-son?" Father said he sure would. Then he busily tried to find what part of Australia Tuck-son was in. In the end, he was ordained for the Diocese of Tucson on June 19, 1950.

He finally arrived in Tucson and arrived at his first parish as an assistant pastor. The pastor greeted him, said how happy he was to see the newly ordained priest. And then the pastor went on a vacation, leaving Father in charge.

Past State Deputy Richard Jeffrey has repeated the story about Father hearing confession in Spanish for the first time. He had no idea what the penitent was saying. During the next week, he asked someone to teach him how to hear confessions in Spanish. He learned to say "Tell me your sins." "Are you truly sorry?" and "Say three hail Mary's." Needless to say, Father became the most popular confessor in the parish. Father Joe's humor and Pastoral commitment are what he is remembered most for.

According to Past State Deputy Jeffrey recounts that he (Gillespie) was never a scholar, though he knew what he was talking about. He was never a builder, though he started a parish or two. He was not the stuff of which Bishops are made, or seminary rectors, or chancellors of a diocese. That was not what he was called to be.  What he was, was Pastoral. He was ordained to be a parish priest and that is what he was: a happy smiling competent minister to God's people. He baptized, said Mass, gave Communion, heard confessions, witnessed marriages and administered the sacraments to the dying. And in the end, isn't that what the people of God want in their priest?

Father Gillespie's priestly career eventually led him to the Diocese of Phoenix. Once in Phoenix, Fr. Gillespie served as Pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Glendale, Saint Gregory in Phoenix, and Saint Elizabeth Seton in Sun City.  He was a Fourth Degree Knight and State Chaplain Emeritus for the Arizona State Council of the Knights of Columbus.

DECEMBER THEME: Keeping Christ in Christmas

Brothers ALL:
In keeping with the Spirit of Christmas during this holy time of the year, we want to share a reminder that “Christ is The Reason for the Season”. Brothers, we must continue to keep Christ in Christmas regardless of the distractions and challenges that we face in our everyday lives.
Pray that Jesus be the main focus of our daily lives, and with the strength that God provides through that prayer, we must continue to support our Church, the Clergy, and our fellow man. The Knights of Columbus is and will continue to be the right arm of the Church, and we must remain strong and diligent.
Gentlemen, have you brought in a new candidate to the Order in the last 45 days? In the last 60 days? In the last 90 days? There are thousands of Catholic men registered in our State, who are not Knights of Columbus. If we are not reaching out as God has intended us to do, and bring Catholic Men into the Knights of Columbus, we are not evangelizing.
Remember the simple strategy we spoke about, One Member, Per Council, Per Month.
I look forward to seeing you all at the Mid-Year meeting next week, and I pray that you and your families find the love, peace and joy during this Christmas Season.
I’ve attached some very useful guidelines offered by Supreme to keep the councils focused on Recruitment and Programs. Please share this information with your respective Councils.
Vivat Jesus!!

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS THANKSGIVING DAY COMMUNITY - Council 7465

Knights of Columbus Council 7465

Brother Knights and the Community of St Jerome.

What a wonderful event this was. I want to thank all the Knights and the St. Jerome Community volunteers that were there for the good of all.  The dinner was supported in so many ways from donated cooked turkeys, the serving line, to table clean up, and to the love and support of the Ministry Basic Mission.  For without these special people, our community would be at a loss.  There are so many people in need and speaking for all who serve you are truly doing what Christ has asked us to do, love one another.  With our efforts combined we were able to serve over 200 guest and another 50 “ to go“ plates for those who were not able to make the Thanksgiving Gathering.

Vivat Jesus!

Knights of Columbus Responds to Hurricane Sandy

In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy, the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus, in conjunction with local and state councils across the Northeast, is joining relief efforts.

The Supreme Council announced this morning that it is making an immediate $100,000 donation, giving $50,000 each to the state councils of New York and New Jersey to assist in local relief efforts in those hardest-hit jurisdictions.

In addition, the Supreme Council has launched an online donation drive, soliciting contributions from its members and the general public. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go directly to relief efforts in local communities.

“Knights have a long tradition of providing disaster relief,” said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson, “and this is no exception. Our communities need our time, our help, and our financial assistance, and we are going to do all that we can - working closely with our local and state councils - to help those most in need as a result of this storm.”    Join us with your commitment to DONATE NOW.
