Native American Flute Students Going to Rome

St. Pius X Council 10762 concluded a very successful fundraising effort to help send three students of the Native American flute to Rome for the Canonization of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, the first Native American Saint, in October. The students were invited to perform during the ceremony by the Vatican. The council has raised over $7,000 to help these young people realize this dream.

Vince Redhouse, their teacher and a member of Council 10762, and the students, Kyle Roanhorse, Murvyn Hoskie, Xuxua Garnenez, gave a concert at St. Pius X Church in Tucson Monday evening. They played a mix of Native American, classical, jazz and religious tunes. Solos by each of the students demonstrated not only the students’ talent but the teaching skill of Vince Redhouse.

To all who have donated to make their dream come true, please accept their sincere “thank you.” Your support will give them an opportunity to do something truly marvelous in their lives.

Council 10441 - Brother Knight Enters Seminary

George Holley, a Knight in Council #10441 and Sir Knight in Assembly #2392 at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Tucson, was recently guided by the Holy Spirit to seek a Vocation to the Priesthood.  Fr. John Lyons, the Pastor at St. Thomas the Apostle, announced this news at all the Masses on Saturday, May 26th. & Sunday, May 27th.  A group of selected Brother Knights hosted a Farewell Dinner for George at Giacomo's Italian Restaurant on Sunday evening, July 15th.  George left Tucson this month to enter Sacred Heart Seminary in Hales Corners, Wisconsin.

George served the parish for many years as an usher and a lector.  Most importantly, he was the Parish RCIA Director who guided many adults to the Holy Catholic Faith. George contributed to in the Council and the Assembly in a variety of ways. He was the Chancellor on the council's 1st. Degree Exemplification Team.  He helped organize an annual council fall tradition, "The All Knighter", a barbecue to welcome new members followed by a program with a Catholic speaker.  He was a regular participant in another unique council activity, "The Round Table Discussion" (a forum on contemporary Catholic issues moderated by our Chaplain, Fr. Chris Corbally, S.J.) the 1st. Saturday of each month after the 8:00 A.M. Mass.

George was a stock broker and a small business owner here in Tucson for many years.

Our blessings go with George on his journey of faith.  He will be remembered by our fraternity of Knights.

Vivat Jesus,

David Orr

Council 3145 - Kingman

Knights_of_columbus_presening_

This past weekend Council 3145 in Kingman had a Birthday party for Father McGivney after Mass and had approx. 150 parishioners enjoy cake (2 with a perfect picture of Father McGiveny) along with Vanilla and Chocolate ice cream. Also, there was Ice Tea, Lemonade, and water. In addition Bishop Olmsted was in attendance along with Father Matthew. After we finished with the party at about 1:30 we then went to the Knights hall and had a hamburger and hot dog barbecue for the Knights, their wives, and some potential new members were invited as well. In attendance at the Barbecue were about 35 people. Quite a feat to pull off a double party in one day for so many people in a council that has been struggling  to be active. We hope to repeat in future years with better attendance andmnore new members. It really enticed some men and their wives to want to be a part of it.

The attached picture is from the birthday party we had today at St. Mary's Parish center, earlier today.

Grand Knight, Tom Curtis, of St. Mary's, Knight's of Columbus, Council 3145, hands Pastor, Father Matthew Krempel, a check for $550.00, from the Knight's of Columbus, while visiting Bishop Thomas Olmstead, looks on.

Arizona Responders program

Brothers,

The Arizona Knights of Columbus Second Responders program is slowly forming this year, I have a few key players in this Community Outreach program.  This program was announced by Supreme Knight Carl Anderson at the 129th Supreme Convention held in Denver.  This statewide program will help local councils to prepare to serve as "Second Responders" by providing food, clothing and shelter.  I would like the program to expand as a "Search and Rescue" team that will help local authorities find missing persons lost in the forest or desert.  Imagine,  the Knights of Columbus helping find a missing people in our vast forest or hot desert's of Arizona, not only physically, but in our prayers.  We are the power of "ONE" in this state, Team Arizona!  This program will be taking off throughout the order, each state will have their own program, let Arizona set the example and lead the Western Districts.  I would like as many Knights as possible to volunteer for this program, once I have enough we can start training.  Please email me your contact information

God bless

Santa Catalina Council 12345

Alfonso De la Riva ordained Deacon for Diocese of Tucson

Alfonso De la Riva, a member of Santa Catalina Council (12345), was ordained a Deacon at a Mass at St. Augustine Cathedral by Bishop Gerald Kicanas on June 16, 2012.

Later that day the Rev. Mr. De la Riva, assisted Fr. Larry Sanders  at Mass for the first time as a Deacon, proclaiming the Gospel and distributing Communion.   Following Mass, a large number of parishioners attended a reception in the parish hall to offer congratulations.  The festivities of the day were shared by Alfonso’s wife Maria Luisa, who did the first reading at the Mass.  Also attending were children Celia, Mary, Jay, and Beto; and the joy of their hearts, grandsons Urijah and Antonio.

Alfonso and Maria Luisa (“Licha”) moved to Catalina 23 years ago from San Manuel where Alfonso had been employed as a miner. After moving to Catalina, he became the Operations Manager for Perry Heating & Cooling. He and Maria Luisa were quickly involved in ministry at Santa Catalina. Alfonso

works with the Hospitality and Cursillos Ministries as well as Spanish Mass lector, Eucharistic Minister, leads the Men’s Spanish Prayer Group, and is a volunteer with the Youth Ministry. Maria Luisa is currently staff Coordinator of Hispanic Ministries, trainer of the ministers for the Spanish Mass, works with Alfonso in the Baptismal Ministry, and is the “official” translator when necessary.

The Santa Catalina Council is extremely proud and pleased to have Deacon Alfonso as a member.
