Brothers,
Being members of the Knights of Columbus, we have an
obligation to provide faith filled service to our Church, family, and
community. To provide this service, we need to be strong in our ranks. Our
councils need to have strong leadership with abundant membership. With strong
councils, we can do the work we are called to do. Supreme Knight Carl Anderson
says, “We seek to make God known to others both in the work we do and in the
educational and evangelizing initiatives we support, bringing the Good News of
the Gospel to as many people as possible.”
On August 12, the Order celebrates our founder Fr. Michael
McGivney’s Birthday. On August 14, the Order memorializes our founder Fr.
Michael McGivney’s death. The Order has asked all councils to celebrate our
founder with Family Week Celebrations, to include an Order wide First Degree
Week from August 11 to 17, 2014. During this week, all councils are asked to
conduct a 1st Degree for new members and a Family program for your
council. Invite the new member and his family to your council’s Family Program.
This could be a picnic, a bowling tournament, pool party, Council night at the
movies, corporate communion, etc. Remember that new members join our Order with
a purpose in mind. If you engage them and their family early in their Knight’s
career, they will stay active in your council. Make the new member and his
family feel very welcome and ask them to join in your programs. By doing so,
you should not see a retention issue.
Bringing new members into your council is a great way to
bring the Good News of the Gospel to as many people as possible. By living our
State theme, “I will choose Christ, I will choose love, I choose to serve”, you
and your council will exemplify our four principles of Charity, Unity,
Fraternity, and Patriotism. With this, your current members and your new
members will be living the Gospel in your council, Church, family, and
community.
Vivat Jesus!
