KofC Crowd & Parking control - Bishop Weisenberger Installation Mass on 11-29-17

Brother Knights,

 

In addition to providing transportation for visiting family and clergy, the KofC have been asked to assist with parking lot monitoring and crowd control both before and after the Mass. A minimum of 20 KofC are requested but I would recommend that we try to recruit at least 25 to 30. Doing so would allow brothers to rotate.

 

The KofC would man the parking lot entrances before the Mass and direct traffic to other locations, including the parking garage once the parking lot is full.  The KofC also would assist in manning the doors during Mass, especially the 2 doors on the north entrance. Those doors lead to the area where construction is on-going and are not entrance or exit doors; however, they must be open during Mass due to fire code.

 

Finally, the KofC would direct Mass attendees to the Stillwell House for the reception after the Mass. The Stillwell House is on the southwest corner of South Fifth Avenue and East 12th Street, approximately 3 blocks east of the Cathedral.

 

As you know, the Bishop's Installation Mass is by invitation only. Brothers who volunteer would have an opportunity to rotate inside the Cathedral and observe at least part of the Mass. Obviously, all 30 could not be inside at the same time.

 

Hector Tellez and I are going to be at the Cathedral for the Mass on November 29, recommend allowing Hector Tellez and I to coordinate the KofC volunteers.

 

We would request that Brothers who are interested reply via email or calling Hector (Cell: 520-305-6538) or myself (520-241-8244). We will then make a list of the first 25 to 30 and provide their names to the Diocese as those who will be involved.

 

As noted above, the Mass is by invitation only and there will be strict security. Only those Brothers whose names are listed will be allowed to assist.  Show time for volunteers would be at 12:00 Noon; and the detail would conclude at approximately 5:00 PM.  Those brothers who volunteer for this event would also be invited to attend the reception at the Stillwell House if they choose.

State Soccer Challenge November 18

STATE SCCCER CHALLENGE

Brother Knights,

The State Soccer Challenge 2017 will be held on November 18 at 9:30.  The location for the event is at St. Jerome School 10815 N 35 Avenue, Phoenix, AZ. 85029

Registration will begin at 9:00 and last to 9:30 the challenge will start directly after.

Refreshment and brunch will be offered by St. Joseph’s Youth Camp.

District Deputies, Grand Knights and Council Youth Chairmen please take control on the score sheets.  The parents or participants should not hand deliver the score sheets on the day of the event if all possible.  The score sheets should be emailed or mailed to the State Executive Secretary Rick Garrison before the challenge and copies should be brought as back up if needed. azknights@q.com (Rick Please Add The Address)

Flag Retirement Ceremony

11 Sir Knights from 4 assemblies conducted a flag retirement ceremony for over 400 students at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School on 09 November 2017 to honor veterans.

Our worthy state Chaplain, Father Pat Crino, led the opening prayer, Faithful Navigator of the Father Anthony Rey Assembly # 3617, SK Ray Obral was the master of ceremonies.  District Marshal, SK Drew Mansager thrilled the students by playing taps on his trumpet.  A new flag was presented to the school to replace the one that was retired and a photo of the four chaplains from the USS Dorchester in WWII was presented to Principal Roll for display on the school’s veterans bulletin board.

Drivers for Visiting Bishops AND Welcome messages for Bishop Weisenburger

Brother Knights:    Please pass this information along to your Councils

An opportunity is upcoming in Nov 17 to help our Diocese of Tucson facilitate visiting Cardinals, Bishops, and other Dignitaries who will be attending the Installation of Bishop Edward Weisenburger.  Bishop Weisenburger will be installed as the 7th Bishop of the Diocese of Tucson on Wed 29 Nov at 2PM.  Knights of Columbus, through the Tucson Chapter, have been requested to provide drivers and greeters who will welcome Dignitaries at the Tucson Airport prior to the installation celebration and drive them to their lodging; then provide return transportation after the event.  We have been notified tentatively that the traveling Dignitaries are expected to arrive between Mon-Wed 27-29 Nov; then depart between Wed-Fri 29 Nov- 1 Dec.  However, this window may expand (or contract) once the Diocese receives the Dignitaries' RSVPs and itineraries.

We will be working in 2-man teams:  one driver and one greeter.  The greeter, with signage, will meet the visiting dignitaries inside the Airport; assist them with their luggage; and escort them outside to the waiting transportation provided by the driver.  The driver and greeter must  have personal cell phones to stay in contact; as the driver will need to drop off the greeter at passenger pickup; then await the dignitaries' arrival in the vehicle Cell Phone waiting lot.  The volunteer drivers and greeters need to be dressed in business casual, with wear of KofC Council or Assembly shirts encouraged.  Vehicles needs to be large enough to accommodate the visiting Dignitaries and luggage as well as the greeter.  We expect some dignitaries will travel with assistants or friends/family, so we are in need of large SUVs or mini-/full-size VANs to accommodate larger groups.  We expect arrivals and departures during morning, afternoon, and early evening hours; estimated between 9AM to 8PM.  

Volunteer drivers will provide their vehicles without reimbursement for expenses (fuel, etc.), and should be generally familiar with Tucson roads and lodging.   A good vehicle or personal GPS is recommended.
If you'd like to volunteer as a driver or greeter, please email or call the chairmen for this event.  Please provide them your email address and cell phone number; plus the days and hours you are able to volunteer.  The chairmen will manage all contact with the Diocese for itineraries and arrival/departure times plus lodging locations.  The chairmen will maintain a schedule of all the dignitaries arrival & departures; and assign driver/greeter teams for each transportation event.  We recommend you find your own team member to pair-up with; but if you do not have a 2nd volunteer; we may be able to pair you up with another volunteer.  The chairmen and their contact information is below:

Fourth Degree Exemplification - Nov 25

Brothers All;

Each ‘degree’ of the Knights of Columbus is associated with a particular virtue, the fourth being “Patriotism”. Consequently, the 4th Degree is often known as ‘The Patriotic Degree’.

It was established in New York on 22 February, 1900. The requirements for joining the 4th are that a brother Knight must be a third degree member in good standing, be an exemplary Catholic, and be of sound citizenship of his country.

The Fourth Degree is frequently regarded as an honorary title but should rather be thought of in terms of service to church and country, and the goals of the Fourth Degree may be summarized as the promotion of the ideals of Catholicism and Patriotism side by side.

In more detail, these goals may be stated as:

• To promote and strengthen the patriotic spirit of the civic community.

• To educate its members, and others, both in the teachings of Holy Mother Church, and the history of our nation.

• To promote by example the highest type of citizenship so necessary for the preservation and perpetuation of republican form of government, and its democratic institutions.

• To oppose dissemination and spread of doctrine dangerous to our form of government, and to the Divine law of faith and morality.

• To support by word and deed, the duly constituted authorities of local, state and national government, and to recognize excellence in public life.

Therefore, it is not unusual to find Fourth Degree Knights participating visibly in church events, such as Eucharistic processions, and others, and in the community, standing up for the unborn and the elderly at Pro-Life events, and commemorating the sacrifices of previous generations.

The primary purpose of the Fourth Degree is to foster the spirit of patriotism by promoting responsible citizenship and a love of and loyalty to the Knights' respective countries through active membership in local Fourth Degree groups called assemblies.

Please take the time during both Council and Assembly meetings to promote the Fourth Degree Exemplification and encourage Third Degree or lower members to attain the title of Sir Knight. Make sure a candidate receives the full packet of information which includes valuable instructions on what is needed for registration.

At this time when our way of life is being challenged both locally and globally, we ask that all men rise up to answer the call of becoming a Fourth Degree member to show that we will publicly defend both our rights and religious responsibilities.
