2015 Special Olympics Southern Arizona Breakfast With Champions

        Yesterday the 3rd annual Southern Arizona Breakfast With Champions was held at the Westin La Paloma Resort & Spa in Tucson, Arizona.

Representing the Knights (photo attached) were five (5) members of the Saint Pius X Council (10762), Arizona State Council PWID Chairman Ken Gallagher, and myself (I was taking the pictures).

There were just under 700 people in attendance.

This was an awesome event  with many very good motivational speakers (i.e. Jessica Cox, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, and more).

The University of Arizona Cheerleaders, and Wilbur (UofA's mascot) were also present to cheer on the event.

Members of Team USA Softball, who won the Gold Medal at the 2015 World Games, were present and received awards, presented by the UofA softball head coach (Mike Candrea).

Our Knights of Columbus logo (also attached) was up on the sponsor's slide that was being projected on two (2) big screens.

It was also in the event program on the sponsor's page. Ken Gallagher has an extra copy for our Worthy State Deputy.

This is one event that, if you have the time, is worth driving to Tucson for.

Soccer Update

Brother Knights,

 

Hard to believe we are ready to start our New Year and programs for 2015.  I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce Joe Danko and myself, Howard Birnbaum; we will be Co-Chairs for the State Soccer Challenge.

The Soccer Challenge is a Supreme sponsored activity and has grown each and every year thanks to your active and early involvement in getting the word out.  Now is the time to get started and plan this year's challenge at the Council, District and State level.  Below are some key dates and general information for you to review at your upcoming Officer's and Council Meeting's.

·         Council Level Challenges to be completed by the end of September

·         District Level Challenges to be completed by the end of October

·         State Soccer Challenge will be held on November 14^th at Bourgade Catholic High School (see below)

Please select your Soccer Chair now, order the Soccer Challenge kit from Supreme and start planning today!  Working with other Council's in your District may also be helpful.  Some areas do not have access to Soccer Goals and pooling resources to complete this great program would be beneficial.  If you need any assistance getting the word out or working with another Council let us know and I'll be happy to help.

District level Challenges are not required to compete in State.  If you don't have enough competitors within your District, winners from each age group and gender group will be advanced to State from each Council.

2015 BOWLING COMPETITION

                  Shift 1:  8:45AM – 11:15AM
                  Shift 2: 10:45AM – 1:15PM

(Thursday – Juniors; Friday – Seniors/High School; Saturday – Adults)

 
 
Where:         Golden Pin Lanes  
                  1010 W. Miracle Mile
 
 

What:           This is our biggest competition of the year, with approximately 1,000 athletes competing over the course of three days. Volunteers are needed to assist with monitoring the lanes and hand-scoring ramp bowlers. We are also looking for honor guards, first aid providers (EMTs/RNs) and photographers for each session. Volunteer slots will be filled on a first-come basis (we generally have the most difficulty finding volunteers for Thursday and Friday). Due to the demands of the job assignments, volunteers must be age 16 or older for this competition.

 
 
To Register:   Send an email to Office@SOAZTucson.org and provide your name, email address and which day(s)/time(s) you are willing to volunteer. Also indicate if you know how to hand score bowling (the majority of games are machine scored). No phone calls please.

Arizona Knights of Columbus Workshop: "Find Us Ready to Welcome Our Brothers: Our Pathway to Fraternity"

Brothers,

 

We are very excited to announce that the Arizona State Council will be conducting workshops throughout the state in November 2015, with the theme of, ”Find Us Ready to Welcome Our Brothers: Our Pathway to Fraternity”. These meetings will be centrally based on how to host a First Degree, Admissions Degree, and the proper way to conduct a council business meeting.  We will need to verify membership cards at these meetings to make sure everyone in the room is at least a First Degree member.

               

·         Monday November 9: East Valley (Council 3121 in Chandler) 7:00 to 9:00 PM

·         Tuesday November 10: West Valley (Council 3855 in Glendale) 7:00 to 9:00 PM

·         Wednesday November 11: Tucson (Council 1200 in Tucson) 7:00 to 9:00 PM

·         Thursday November 12: North Valley (Council 12449, St. Patrick’s in Scottsdale) 7:00 to 9:00 PM

 

State Ceremonial Chairman Ray Obral and State Youth Director Skip Hopler will be leading the sessions on ceremonials. They are both experts on conducting degrees and will be sharing their experience with us. Remember that every council has a First Degree Team. You will learn techniques to conduct the ceremony, even if you don’t know the roles from memory. Every council should plan to send their Council Officers and ceremonial team members to learn about Supreme’s current protocols for our Degree ceremonials.

 

We will also be discussing other various state programs to help you grow and strengthen your council. Additionally, we will be discussing how to earn the coveted Star Council Award. You may already heard of our state’s continuous focus on councils earning the Star Council Award. Last fraternal year, we did a fantastic job at earning Star Council Awards across our great jurisdiction. We are encouraging every District Deputy in Arizona to have at least one council in their district earn this award this year, as well. Some District Deputies have several councils working to reach this goal. We have challenged every District Deputy to earn the coveted Star District Award this year, too. There is also a state level award similar to the Star Council and Star District, called ”Circle of Honor”. Arizona last earned this coveted award 6 years ago. It is time for Arizona to show the rest of the Order just how great this jurisdiction really is! You all deserve to earn this prestigious award. It is our state’s goal to earn this award through our continued stellar performance in the 2015-2016 fraternal year. You all deserve it!

 

All Brother Knights are invited to attend a workshop. They are designed to help you to conduct the First Degree, Admissions Degree ceremony, a council business meeting, and earn the Star Council Award, plus answer your questions on the requirements to earn the award. The same agenda and material will be discussed at each of the workshops. You only need to attend one workshop. We look forward to seeing many Brother Knights at these important workshops.

Brothers,

In the world-wide Catholic calendar, the month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary. No form of extra-liturgical devotion to Mary is more widely practiced among the faithful or found by them to be more satisfyingly complete than the Rosary, which has come to be regarded as the very badge of Catholic piety. In Arizona, we have a very unique and special opportunity to show our devotion to Mary, our Mother, through our participation with the Arizona Rosary Celebration. This is the largest Rosary event like this in the United States of America. This year, we will be honoring Mary under Her title of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. This beautiful event will be held in the Diocese of Tucson, on Saturday, October 24, 2015, 10:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, with the Most Reverend Gerald F. Kicanas, Bishop of Tucson, as the Presider. And then, it will be held in the Diocese of Phoenix, Sunday, October 25, 2015, 2:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m., at the Phoenix Convention Center, Halls F & G, with the Most Reverend Thomas J. Olmsted, Bishop of Phoenix, as the Presider, and Most Reverend Eduardo A. Nevares, Auxiliary Bishop of Phoenix, attending. This is an event that every Knight and his family should attend. I look forward to seeing you there.

A great way to strengthen your council is to participate in Supreme’s October Church Recruitment Drive. It makes sense to look for new members in the place you’re most likely to find them — your parish. One efficient and proven way to do this is to hold a Church Recruitment Drive. To make your Church Recruitment Drive a success you will need the right tools. To ensure your success, please consult you District Deputy and the Supreme website for more information on the tools and structure this type of drive. Bringing prospective and new members, along with their families, to the Arizona Rosary Celebration is a great way to show them our programs of charity and spirituality.

The Arizona Knights of Columbus 2015-2016 fraternal year’s theme is “Find Us Ready Lord”. This year’s theme deals with the Destiny of Man and how we prepare ourselves for our final reward. We can prepare with Service, Prayer, Charity, Unity, Fraternity, & Patriotism.  We need to build our Order stronger so together we can work to combat the evil lurking in our world today. Please pray the Prayer of St. Michael the Archangel at the end of every meeting and gathering. Satan is destroying our society and Church while working on every family, man, woman, and child to not follow the teachings of our Catholic Church. We must keep our councils and assemblies strong to fight this battle and defend everything we know as good. Please pray that St. Michael will protect us and our Lord will guide us so we will remain victorious and continue to build our Church with service and faith.

Reverend Fredrick J. Adamson, V.G., Moderator of the Curia, for the Diocese of Phoenix says, “This Exhortation from the heart of our Bishop to the hearts of the priests, deacons, consecrated and lay men of the Diocese calls them to take up their role in the Spiritual Battle.  It calls them to know their identity as men in Christ called to excellence, prayer and service.  It calls them to love others, precisely as men, in the self-sacrificial way to which they are called.  It calls them to follow the Lord Jesus Christ as men who are missionary disciples, as Pope Francis has been asking.  It calls us to protect and guide those we love, particularly in families.  Following the Holy Father’s visit for the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia last week and preceding the Synod on the Family in Rome next week, the timing of this Exhortation is providential.”
