Send some love to Newtown, CT

Dear CV Friends,

Imagine being a Catholic priest in Newtown, CT.

Fr. Luke Suarez and Msgr. Robert Weiss serve at St. Rose of Lima parish in the heart of the shattered New England town. CV blogger Tom Crowe personally knows Fr. Luke as he was in seminary with him for a year.

Tom also knows Fr. Luke's sister, who penned the note below.

We send it along and hope you will be moved to act on her suggestion.

- Your Friends at CatholicVote.org

My friends,

All of you, I am sure, have heard so much about the tragedy in Newtown, CT. Many of you have received emails from me about my younger brother, Father Luke Suarez, who is a priest at St. Rose of Lima parish, a Catholic church just down the road from Sandy Hook Elementary. He, and his pastor, Monsignor Weiss, arrived at the school within moments of the shooting, and have been caring for the community ever since. The picture I have included was taken at the school.

Father Luke has an impossible task before him. His diocese is without a bishop right now…. Monsignor … is personally devastated by the losses. The parish is very large…. The rectory has received serious threats, and as my brother gave the homily Sunday at the noon mass, the church had to be evacuated by SWAT teams. After experiencing identity theft and online hacking incidents, he had to erase all of his internet accounts. After a weekend of endless media requests, notifications and vigils with heartbroken families, and little sleep, he now has two wakes and two funerals every day, until the fourth Sunday of Advent. Father Luke has not even been ordained two years.

My large family has been trying to send Father Luke our love and support from afar, and one of my brothers was able to visit with him briefly a couple times. All he asks for is prayer.

I have been wracking my brain, trying to think of a way that our beautiful, loving community could tangibly reach out to Father Luke, Monsignor Weiss, and the St. Rose parish, to support them in this most awful of times. I have sent many prayer requests, and I am asking for more prayers again. But I also want to ask everyone to search their hearts, and if the Holy Spirit moves you, please consider sending one of your family’s Christmas cards to the rectory, with a few words of love and encouragement. Here is his address:

Father Luke Suarez
46 Church Hill Road
Newtown, CT 06470

My brother has said over and over again that without the prayer support he is receiving, he could not keep going. And this week is only the beginning. Everyone there is still in shock. Their peaceful home has been desecrated by violence. They will need to live with this sorrow forever.

But in our weakness is His strength. Grace abounds. Can you help me carry him through this time of trial?

On a hopeful note, Father Luke did say that no media coverage has even touched the deep, beautiful awakening of faith that has occurred there. Their tiny church, where my children have received sacraments and where Luke was ordained, has been full of people in prayer without ceasing since this tragedy happened. Love is stronger than death.

Please feel free to share the address with your family, friends, and community. An outpouring of love will sustain these good priests through their impossible ministry–impossible on their own, but possible with God.

I am so grateful to live in this community. We are all so blessed with one another. Every day, I see you all loving one another as Christ loved. Thank you for letting me reach out to you now.

With humble appreciation.

December 2012

To all Arizona Knights of Columbus, their spouses, and loved ones,

As the year 2012 comes to a close, Connie and I would like to take a moment to wish everyone a Christmas filled with joy and peace, and a blessed and Happy New Year!

As we reflect on this past year, we realize how blessed we have been in the many friendships we have formed and in the support we have received from each and every one of you.

We are continually amazed at the outpouring of selfless love and caring that is being shown to our brothers and sisters in Christ here in Arizona.  Whether it is in support of Special Olympics, Silver Rose, St. Vincent de Paul food bank collections, national disasters such as Hurricane Sandy or projects within your own neighborhoods, the Knights of Columbus continue to demonstrate to the communities around Arizona and the world that they truly are “the strong right arm of the Church”.

As we begin the year 2013, let us keep in mind our responsibilities to uphold religious freedoms and the right to life.  Let us also continue to reflect on and participate in this “Year of Faith” by actively living our faith and inviting others to join our order so they too can live their faith more deeply.  As Pope Benedict said in a private audience with the Knights of Columbus in Oct. 2008, “may the Knights of Columbus discover ever new ways to serve as a leaven of the Gospel in the world and a force for the renewal of the Church in holiness and apostolic zeal”.

May God continue to bless all of you and your families with good health, peace and happiness, and may He continue to bless the Knights of Columbus.

Vivat Jesus!

Three Hail Mary Prayer Drive for Newtown CT

Dear Fellow Brothers:

Our parish and community were deeply affected by the events at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. Newtown Connecticut is 55% Catholic and our Church, St Rose of Lima, has suffered a heavy toll. This week we are having 8 funerals, most of them for children. Many, many people have asked how they can help. One way is with your prayers. Therefore the Newtown Knights of Columbus are asking religious organizations, fellow Knights of Columbus councils, and individuals to say three Hail Mary's (at least) for us:

one for the victims and their families,

one for the first responders and teachers,

and one for our town to give us strength to support the afflicted.

Then email the name of your organization, the location, the number of people present, and the number of Hail Mary's that were said to HailMary@kofc185.org. We will keep track of the total and who said them. At an appropriate time, we will present this list to the people who so badly need our prayers.

We are doing this simply to console the brokenhearted among us. We want to let them know in a concrete way that we are thinking about them, care about them and are praying for them. Unfortunately in this situation, there is not much we can offer except our thoughts and prayers. Hopefully this gesture and our prayers will provide some comfort to those who have faced unimaginable sorrow.

With over 14,000 Knights of Columbus councils, we are hoping to collect a long list of prayers for our people. Please support this prayer drive and pass it on to your organizations and other councils.

Thank you for your support.

SK Rev. Joseph Gillespie - Obituary

Sir Knight, Rev. Joseph Gillespie

December 21, 1924 - November 26, 2012

Chaplain_emeritus
It is with great sadness that the Knights of Columbus Arizona State Council mourns the death of Brother Knight and State Chaplain Emeritus Sir Knight Rev. Joseph Gillespie. Fr. Joe was called to his eternal rest with our Lord this past Monday evening. Viewing will be on Friday morning, November 30, 2012 at 9:00 AM. Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. Both will be held at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church located at 3424 N. 18th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85015.

Joseph Gillespie was born in County Donegal, Ireland in 1924. He attended All Hollows College in Dublin.   Father Gillespie graduated from a seminary that trained priests for the missions, and at that time, the United States was still considered a mission territory. So was Australia. When Father was ready to be ordained, he and a buddy said they wanted to go to Australia.  The priest who made the assignments said to him "Mr. Gillespie, would you be going to Tuck-son?" Father said he sure would. Then he busily tried to find what part of Australia Tuck-son was in. In the end, he was ordained for the Diocese of Tucson on June 19, 1950.

He finally arrived in Tucson and arrived at his first parish as an assistant pastor. The pastor greeted him, said how happy he was to see the newly ordained priest. And then the pastor went on a vacation, leaving Father in charge.

Past State Deputy Richard Jeffrey has repeated the story about Father hearing confession in Spanish for the first time. He had no idea what the penitent was saying. During the next week, he asked someone to teach him how to hear confessions in Spanish. He learned to say "Tell me your sins." "Are you truly sorry?" and "Say three hail Mary's." Needless to say, Father became the most popular confessor in the parish. Father Joe's humor and Pastoral commitment are what he is remembered most for.

According to Past State Deputy Jeffrey recounts that he (Gillespie) was never a scholar, though he knew what he was talking about. He was never a builder, though he started a parish or two. He was not the stuff of which Bishops are made, or seminary rectors, or chancellors of a diocese. That was not what he was called to be.  What he was, was Pastoral. He was ordained to be a parish priest and that is what he was: a happy smiling competent minister to God's people. He baptized, said Mass, gave Communion, heard confessions, witnessed marriages and administered the sacraments to the dying. And in the end, isn't that what the people of God want in their priest?

Father Gillespie's priestly career eventually led him to the Diocese of Phoenix. Once in Phoenix, Fr. Gillespie served as Pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Glendale, Saint Gregory in Phoenix, and Saint Elizabeth Seton in Sun City.  He was a Fourth Degree Knight and State Chaplain Emeritus for the Arizona State Council of the Knights of Columbus.

DECEMBER THEME: Keeping Christ in Christmas

Brothers ALL:
In keeping with the Spirit of Christmas during this holy time of the year, we want to share a reminder that “Christ is The Reason for the Season”. Brothers, we must continue to keep Christ in Christmas regardless of the distractions and challenges that we face in our everyday lives.
Pray that Jesus be the main focus of our daily lives, and with the strength that God provides through that prayer, we must continue to support our Church, the Clergy, and our fellow man. The Knights of Columbus is and will continue to be the right arm of the Church, and we must remain strong and diligent.
Gentlemen, have you brought in a new candidate to the Order in the last 45 days? In the last 60 days? In the last 90 days? There are thousands of Catholic men registered in our State, who are not Knights of Columbus. If we are not reaching out as God has intended us to do, and bring Catholic Men into the Knights of Columbus, we are not evangelizing.
Remember the simple strategy we spoke about, One Member, Per Council, Per Month.
I look forward to seeing you all at the Mid-Year meeting next week, and I pray that you and your families find the love, peace and joy during this Christmas Season.
I’ve attached some very useful guidelines offered by Supreme to keep the councils focused on Recruitment and Programs. Please share this information with your respective Councils.
Vivat Jesus!!

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS THANKSGIVING DAY COMMUNITY - Council 7465

Knights of Columbus Council 7465

Brother Knights and the Community of St Jerome.

What a wonderful event this was. I want to thank all the Knights and the St. Jerome Community volunteers that were there for the good of all.  The dinner was supported in so many ways from donated cooked turkeys, the serving line, to table clean up, and to the love and support of the Ministry Basic Mission.  For without these special people, our community would be at a loss.  There are so many people in need and speaking for all who serve you are truly doing what Christ has asked us to do, love one another.  With our efforts combined we were able to serve over 200 guest and another 50 “ to go“ plates for those who were not able to make the Thanksgiving Gathering.

Knights of Columbus Responds to Hurricane Sandy

In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy, the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus, in conjunction with local and state councils across the Northeast, is joining relief efforts.

The Supreme Council announced this morning that it is making an immediate $100,000 donation, giving $50,000 each to the state councils of New York and New Jersey to assist in local relief efforts in those hardest-hit jurisdictions.

In addition, the Supreme Council has launched an online donation drive, soliciting contributions from its members and the general public. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go directly to relief efforts in local communities.

“Knights have a long tradition of providing disaster relief,” said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson, “and this is no exception. Our communities need our time, our help, and our financial assistance, and we are going to do all that we can - working closely with our local and state councils - to help those most in need as a result of this storm.”    Join us with your commitment to DONATE NOW.

November - Giving Thanks and Sharing

Brother Knights ALL:
The month of November kicks off a special time of the year as we near the holiday of Thanksgiving Day.
We as Knights know that it is fitting to give thanks to Almighty God each and every day, and we just don’t reserve those thanks to once a year event.
Similarly the Knights of Columbus 365 initiative, which asks us to seek out candidates for Knighthood, is something we should do each and every day as well.
Have you asked someone to join the Knights? The charitable works of each council resonates as we help those in need. Why not share the great feeling we experience when we do those activities with others?
We ask God to bless you and your families.

Novena for Life and Liberty and Catholic Pulse

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has called on American Catholics to participate in a Rosary Novena for Life and Liberty Oct. 14-22.  Knights and their families, in solidarity with our bishops, are encouraged to unite in this prayer for the defense of human life and religious freedom in the United States and around the world.

Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore will lead a Mass and Pilgrimage for Life and Liberty at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., Sunday, Oct. 14, from 12 to 2:30 p.m. Those in Washington and nearby states who are able to attend are invited to participate in the Mass and Rosary, which will be broadcast by EWTN and other Catholic TV outlets.

More information about the novena and Mass is available at kofc.org/pilgrimage.

Knights are also invited to remain informed on current issues by means of CatholicPulse.com, a news portal operated by the K of C. CatholicPulse.com debuted Oct. 1, replacing Headline Bistro as the Order’s source of national, world and Vatican news for Knights and concerned Catholics. Catholic Pulse also provides thoughtful opinions and articles from top Catholic thinkers to help you understand the Church’s perspective on the issues of our day.

Visit CatholicPulse.com to sign up for daily email updates and remain engaged and informed about the news that affects our lives as Catholics every day.

ARIZONA ROSARY CELEBRATION COVERS TWO CITIES OVER THREE DAYS

Arizona Knights sponsor statewide event expected to attract over 7,500 in Tucson and Phoenix

For over 36 years, the Diocese of Phoenix has been host to one of the largest annual public Rosary celebrations in the United States. Last year, the Arizona Rosary Celebration established the Rosary Sunday tradition within the Diocese of Tucson. This major celebration in honor of Mary, mother of Jesus Christ, is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and is now held in conjunction with the Dioceses of Tucson and Phoenix and is assisted by many groups and organizations. The events are open to the public and admission is free.

The Arizona Rosary Celebration begins in Tucson on Saturday, October 20, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. It will take place at the Cathedral of Saint Augustine, located at 192 S. Stone Avenue. The Most Rev. Gerald F. Kicanas, Bishop of Tucson, will preside. The celebration continues in Phoenix on Sunday, October 21, 2012, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. at the Phoenix Convention Center, Halls F & G, 100 N. 3rd Street. The Most Rev. Thomas J. Olmsted, Bishop of Phoenix, will preside. Also attending will be the Most Rev. Eduardo Nevares, Auxiliary Bishop of Phoenix.

The Arizona Rosary Celebration is honored to have as its main speaker Reverend Zachary of the Mother of God, SOLT. Father Zachary is the General Lay Servant of the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity (SOLT). He serves as the Priest Director of Administration and Formation for the Lay Faithful, traveling the United States and abroad teaching Catholics to live their Baptismal promises and respond to the Universal Call to Holiness. His participation in the Arizona Rosary Celebration is greatly anticipated.

There are many events related to the Arizona Rosary Celebration taking place on Friday and Saturday in Tucson, and on Saturday and Sunday in Phoenix. More information can be found on the website: www.azrosary.com.

The Knights of Columbus is the largest family fraternal service organization with over 1.8 million members in 10 countries including the Unites States, Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico, the Philippines, and Poland. Last year, the Knights of Columbus donated over $158 million to charities, and its members donated nearly 70 million man-hours in charitable projects.

Communications with the leadership of the celebration is done via E-mail: azrosary@yahoo.com. One can also follow the Arizona Rosary Celebration on Facebook: Arizonarosarycelebration. The media can contact John Garcia, Public Relations Director at telephone (602) 525-4424, or via e-mail: garciakofc@cox.net.

Arizona State Council Hosting Chaplain Development Seminars

At the State Chaplains Meeting, held by Supreme on March 1-4, 2012, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson said, “We (as Knights) must embrace the renewal being carried out in the Catholic Church, and extend and promote that renewal.”  The Order, he continued, needs to be more than a gathering space and a way for Catholic men to get together. The Knights of Columbus also needs to be a conduit through which its members can become better husbands, fathers, workers, citizens, and patriots, grounded in principles of the Order – charity, unity and fraternity. The Knights of Columbus needs to be not just a monthly meeting, but a way of life that forms its members to be better Catholics. Chaplains, from the state level to the council chaplains, are the key to this formation.

Supreme Knight Anderson also spoke on the need for a strong relationship between the clergy and laity, and how such a relationship will in turn strengthen the parishes in which the Order is present. “We will keep our Church strong through parish-based councils. These councils and their members will keep the parishes active and healthy, the laity united with pastors and priests.”

In November 2012, the Arizona State Council is hosting Chaplain Development Seminars in both the Tucson and Phoenix Dioceses.  The purpose of the seminar is to help build this relationship with our Priests and strengthen our Order in Arizona.

Rev. John Grace, O.S.A., the Supreme Director of Chaplain Programs and Development will be leading these powerful seminars, along with Rev. Patrick Crino at the Diocese of Tucson seminar, and Rev. Carlos Gomez at the Diocese of Phoenix seminar. Rev. John Grace will give the Chaplains a roadmap to success, presented a new pamphlet called “10 Keys to Success for Chaplains.” Father Grace says that if Chaplains followed the 10 points, there would be a growth in spiritual development within the Order, and many more men would be attracted to join.

All Priests are invited to attend these informative seminars. We would like to have Council Chaplains, Assembly Faithful Friars, and any other Priests interested in learning more about the Knights of Columbus. Any Diocese of Gallup Priest serving in an Arizona Parish is welcome to attend either of these seminars, as well.  The same seminar will be delivered in both locations, so Priests can choose to attend the most convenient seminar at either Diocese’s office. Many of the State Officers are also attending to address any local questions or concerns. We will be serving a continental breakfast and lunch at the seminar, which will run from 9:00 AM to 1:00PM. Please be sure that your Parish Priests are invited and plan to attend this seminar. To allow for adequate seating and food, please RSVP to Sate Secretary Larry Becker by November 16, 2012, at azlarry@cox.net .

Proclaim Liberty - New eBook by Supreme Knight Carl Anderson

Dear Brother Knight,

This November, we and our fellow citizens will exercise our right to vote. In their document Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, the Bishops of the United States have called "Catholics to form their consciences in the light of their Catholic faith and to bring our moral principles to the debate and decisions about candidates and issues."

Today, a new resource is available to help you and other Catholics form your conscience in keeping with our Catholic principles. A short new eBook by Supreme Knight Carl Anderson, Proclaim Liberty: Notes on the Next Great Awakening in America, brings the issues confronting us in political races and ballot initiatives large and small into focus, using the lens of Catholic social teaching.

Catholics now make up about a quarter of our country's population. The supreme knight's eBook shows how Catholics — by voting in a manner consistent with Catholic social teaching — can transcend our broken politics and excessive partisanship. It lays out a roadmap to truly transforming our country.

The eBook can be downloaded and read on your Kindle, Nook or other eReader. It can also be read on a tablet or computer if you download the free app or software. The cost of the eBook is $2.99 and, as with all of the supreme knight's books, all author proceeds go to charity.

More information, as well as links to eBook sellers, is available at:  kofc.org/proclaimliberty

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Canonization Celebrations

Kateri_tekawitha
Brother Knights,

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha is the first Native American Saint in North America and is a major icon within the Native American Catholic Community. Attached please find a flyer describing the festivities going on here in Tucson during the weekend of the Canonization.

I encourage Councils, Assemblies and brother knights to send donations to help with this historic celebration.  The Knights of Columbus has been very supportive of  Native American Catholic Communities major events in the past.  The Canonization of Saint Kateri is especially significant not only to the Native American Catholic Communities but also to Native American Knights of Columbus members across North America so our support with donations from all our Councils and Assemblies  will help in showing how supportive we can be throughout Arizona.

Donations can be sent to Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Parish, 507 W. 29th St., Tucson, AZ 85713, and write Kateri Canonization Celebration in the memo area.

Thank you for your support.

Mario.

OCTOBER: Score a Touchdown ADD 6 New Members

Brothers ALL:
How many councils can score a touchdown? Yes, add SIX new members to their rosters this month?
We’re confident that with the team spirit that exists among the councils, this should be an achievable goal.
One of the reasons we’re asking the councils to focus on adding six members is because we have a challenge with retention. Brothers, we’re losing members for a couple of reasons. You know what the reasons are, I don’t need to reiterate those. For every member lost, we should be adding two. Ideally, we shouldn’t lose any, but situations happen.
We’ve spoken about the challenges our Catholic Faith is experiencing every day. Brothers, we must grow our Order.
Please find attached activities to help generate interest and enthusiasm to help drive Membership Growth as well as suggestions for Program Activities.
TIP: For those parishes that begin the Mass by greeting those around where they sit, look for a Knight’s Name Badge….. If you don’t see one, you may be looking at a potential New Member. Don’t forget, the easiest way to recruit a Knight is by asking. Don’t forget to wear your Council/Knight’s badges.
Vivat Jesus!!

40 Days for Life/Chandler Kick-Off Rally

Friends,

Our 40 Days for Life Kickoff Event for Fall 2012 will be held on Sunday, September 23rd from 3:00 to 4:00 pm, at Harmony Hallows Park, located behind the Planned Parenthood Offices on Alma School Road.

Harmony Hallows Park
1082 W Galveston Street
Chandler, AZ 85224

Opening Prayer Vigil

We are pleased to announce that we will have a guest speaker from Silent No-More, and a guest speaker from the Hope Mobile at our Kick-off Event. They will share with us the work they are doing to help repair the lives of individuals wounded by abortion, as well as in saving the lives of the unborn through counseling and technology. Please set this time aside to join us. Everyone is invited to picnic with their families in the park and spend time with fellow participants. We will provide water and snacks.

We are praying in thanksgiving that, by God's grace, abortions will no longer be performed at the Planned Parenthood facility in Chandler. Please join us, not only for the kick-off, but in prayer during our 40 day vigil. We have much to be thankful for this year, but there is still much more we need to pray for.

Today, we received this report from the Center for Arizona Policy:

Abortions Drop 8% in Arizona Year to Year

1,173 fewer abortions performed August 2011-July 2012, compared to August 2010-July 2011

The latest statistics from the Arizona Department of Health Services show an 8 percent decrease in abortions performed in Arizona year to year. Thanks in part to the growing pro-life movement in the state, there were 1,173 fewer women harmed by abortion, and fewer pre-born lives lost in August 2011-July 2012 (13,538) compared to August 2010-July 2011 (14,711).

REMEMBER:

Our Fall 2012 Campaign begins Wednesday, September 26, 2012 and ends Sunday, November 4, 2012. Our prayer vigil will take place at the following location:

Planned Parenthood
Chandler Health Center
610 N. Alma School Road
Chandler, AZ 85224

We are asking churches throughout the area to participate in Adopt-A-Day. Adopt-A-Day is simply one church taking ownership for keeping the twelve hour vigil with their congregants for one day with two or more people praying together for each hour. Pastors and church leaders are invited to come with the members of their congregation to lead them in prayer for the unborn. Those interested in Adopt-A-Day can contact Jose Calzadilla at our website address.

Individuals, families, church groups, bible studies, men’s and women’s groups and other church related groups can take hours of prayer. Help us to continue praying not only for the unborn, but for those who staff the facility and those who continue to use the services of Planned Parenthood in Chandler. We must pray until the doors are closed and every mother and child is safe.

We have every morning of our 40 day vigil covered and some of our afternoons; we are still looking for other groups or individuals to join us in prayer.  To locate your church time, please go to our web site and check out the "local news" page.  If you would like to become a church liaison, please contact me directly.  We continue to pray for God to bless us with 40 Churches for 40 Days!

Those needing additional information on pregnancy support or abortion support or counseling, should also check out our links page, which is listed at the top of our web site.

Thank you and God bless!!
